Deacon Ministry The purpose of the Deacon Ministry is to serve the Lord and His Church by assisting the Pastor in meeting the spiritual needs of the Church in caring for the poor, the sick, the sorrowing and the stranger; preparation and administration of the Ordinances; service of Communion and as requested baptism; and in ministering to the spiritual interests of the Church and community. Deacons are ordained helpers and assistants in the Pastoral ministry of Trinity United Church of Christ. Jesus’ life is the model for the Deacon. In Mark 10:45, Jesus said, I came not to be served, but to serve. Deacons exist to serve God and the church. SERVICE is integral to the New Testament name for a Deacon, diakonia, or servant. The primary duties and responsibilities of a Deacon at Trinity: - To personally minister to the spiritual needs of the congregation.
- To visit the sick, praying with them to comfort them and bring hope through Jesus Christ, our Lord.
- To comfort bereaved families, upon notification of a home going of a member or a member of our extended family. Comforting grieving families is to be carried out before, during and after the funeral services.
- To be an example to the children and youth of the church, correcting and teaching them in the love and admonition of the Lord.
- To minister to the needs of the Pastor and his or her family.
- To willingly and cheerfully assist the Pastor when called upon.
- To assist with worship duties, i.e., administering the ordinances or sacraments, which are Baptism and the Lord’s Supper or Holy Communion.
