Scholarship Information

Requirements

  • Applicants MUST be members of Trinity UCC for at least one year AND submit a completed Ministry Verification Form signed by an authorized ministry partner indicating current participation in the respective ministry for at least one year. Students attending college out of town may participate in Adopt A Student Ministry. Applicants may apply for and complete only one scholarship.
  • Applicants may reapply for scholarships designated as renewable up to specified years of renewal excluding the initial scholarship award. Use Renewal Application Form for renewal consideration.
  • “B” GPA equivalent or better is required for consideration of all renewable scholarships
  • All essays must be typed double-spaced, using 12 pt. font size
  • Applicants must submit current official transcripts and test scores with application
  • Late and/or incomplete applications CANNOT be considered
  • Applicants or a family representative must be present on Scholarship Sunday, June 13, 2010 and register with the Scholarship Ministry in the WRIGHT Chapel no later than 1:15 p.m.

    All materials and documents submitted by scholarship applicants, in support of their request for scholarship consideration, become the property of Trinity United Church of Christ. The applicants, subsequent to submittal of such material and/or documents, acknowledge and grant Trinity United Church of Christ permission to use such material or documentation in furtherance of its scholarship and education ministry.     General Scholarships

    Rev. Barbara J. Allen Scholarship “For Such a Time as This!”
    Applicants for this scholarship must be 35 years old or older who are currently enrolled in college to complete his/her first baccalaureate degree after an extended period of absence. At the time of application, applicants must have completed at least one course and registered to continue study at an accredited college or university. The scholarship is renewable annually for up to three (3) years. Applicants must submit:

    • Ministry Verification Form
    • Current official college/university transcripts
    • Current college/university registration verification
    • Submit a 300-400 word essay responding to the topic: “My Pursuit of Education and how it affects the Church Family and the African American Community”

    Lucille Ellison/Kathryn Brown Memorial Scholarship
    Applicants must be high school graduates. Consideration will be given to those students with less than a “B” GPA. Applicants must submit

    • Ministry Verification Form
    • Current official high school transcript and ACT/SAT test scores
    • Copy of acceptance letter from the college/university you plan to attend
    • Two (2) letters of recommendation from:
      1. Adult member of Trinity U.C.C.
      2. Teacher or counselor.

    Dr. Manford J. Bryd, Jr. Scholarship
    Applicants must be currently enrolled college students (2nd year thru graduate level). The award is renewable for up to three (3) years. Applicants must submit:

    • 300-500 word essay on the Black Value System
    • Two (2) letters of recommendation from:
      1. Adult member of Trinity U.C.C.
      2. School counselor or advisor.

    William and Retza Gise Family Scholarship
    Recognizes exemplary community service by a graduating high school senior with less than a “B” GPA. The Recipient(s) are requested to use the funds to purchase a computer for college. Applicants must submit:

    • Ministry Verification Form
    • Current official transcript and ACT/SAT scores
    • Copy of acceptance letter from a four-year college or university you plan to attend
    • Official documentation of community service, dates, who, why, when, where, etc.
    • Two (2) letters of recommendation from:

    Applicants must be graduating from elementary school. Applicants must submit:

    Alzata C. and Judge R. Eugene Pincham CAN-CER-VIVE Memorial Scholarship Fund
    Applicants must be graduating high school senior planning to enter college, or a returning college student. Applicants must submit:

    • Ministry Verification Form
    • Current official transcript and ACT/SAT scores, or current official college transcript
    • Copy of college acceptance letter (high school student)
    • 300 word essay on “Attending college: My pursuit of Knowledge” or “Earning a College Degree: Serving my Community”
    • One (1) letter of recommendation from:
      1. Letter of recommendation from teacher or counselor/advisor.

    Streisand Jana Sanders Memorial Scholarship
    For child of a single parent, graduating from high school, registered to attend a Historical Black College or University (HBCU). Student must have a Grade Point Average (GPA) of at least 2.5 (c+). Applicants must submit:

    • Current official high school transcript with ACT/SAT test scores
    • Copy of college acceptance letter and proof of registration for next semester
    • 300 word essay
    • Official documentation of community service, dates, who, why, when, where, etc.
    • Two (2) letters of recommendation from:

      2. School counselor or advisor.

    Cheryl Guyton Memorial Scholarship
    Recognizes graduating high school seniors with a minimum “B” GPA or equivalent and scores 26 or higher on the ACT and/or 1760 or higher on the SAT. The scholarship is renewable thru completion of the baccalaureate degree or up to three (3) years. Applicants must submit:

    • Ministry Verification Form
    • Current official transcript and ACT/SAT scores
    • Copy of acceptance letter from college or university you plan to attend
    • 500-600 word Personal statement outlining your personal life goals which includes a paragraph about your personal, community interests and a community activity or program in which you are involved
    • Two (2) letters of recommendation from:
      1. School principal or counselor, and
      2. Director of the community organization(s) in which you serve

The Arts

Joseph W. Evans “Struggling Artist” Memorial Scholarship
Recognizes visual artists (in areas including drawing, painting, photography) grades 9 thru college. Applicants must verify community involvement. This scholarship is renewable depending on current grade (?). Applicants must submit:

  • Ministry Verification Form
  • Three (3) examples of your work (will be returned)
  • A 250-word essay on artistic interests, goals and aspirations
  • Two (2) letters of recommendation from:
    1. Art teacher or adult member of Trinity UCC
    2. Adult member of a community organization who verifies community activity

Dr. Jeffrey P. Radford Memorial Scholarship
Honors Dr. Radford’s 30 year of consecrated and devoted service at Trinity United Church of Christ and recognizes academic achievement and personal development to the ministry of music in the Christian church. Applicants must be music majors at either the undergraduate or graduate level. Applicants must submit:

  • Current official college/university/conservatory transcript
  • Documentation of honors and extracurricular awards in music

Elsie Benita Haines Memorial Scholarship
Recognizes students in Culinary Arts and/or Home Economics. Applicants must submit:

Dwain Phillip Lubin Engineering Scholarship
Recognizes a graduating African American male high school senior who ranks 21 or lower in his class who has been accepted into an electrical, mechanical or structural engineering undergraduate program, preferably at a Historically Black College or University (HBCU). The scholarship is renewable for up to three (3) years. Applicants must submit:

  • Ministry Verification Form
  • Current official high school transcript and ACT/SAT test scores
  • Copy of letter of acceptance into one of the above undergraduate engineering programs
  • 200 word essay addressing the topic: “The Most Interesting Fact about the Engineering Field and Why I Chose to Pursue Study in the Profession.”

Mildred Chapman Memorial Scholarship
Recognizes 2 or 4 year nursing students. The Scholarship is renewable for up to three (3) years. Applicants must submit

Rev. Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr. / Deacon Don Moody Scholarship
Recognizes individuals, age 18 and older, who have completed the 12-Step Program and desire to further their formal education in substance abuse and/or rehabilitation. Prospective scholarship recipients must to commit to volunteer service on the crisis line of the TUCC Drug/Alcohol Ministry or work in a related 12-Step Program. This scholarship is renewable for up to three (3) years and applicants must submit:

  • Ministry Verification Form
  • Current official college or university transcript
  • Copy of acceptance letter from college/university applicant plans to attend
  • 300 word essay/bio which addresses personal and/or family addiction, why you should you receive this scholarship and your long-term goals after graduation.
  • Three (3) sealed letters of recommendation from
    1. Teacher
    2. Councelor
    3. Alderperson or community leader

Swanegan Memorial Teacher’s Scholarship
Recognizes education majors at the undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate levels. The scholarship is renewable and recipients may reapply depending upon current educational level. Applicants must submit:

  • 300 word essay which addresses “Racing to the Top Legislation and Its Impact on African American Children in Urban Education Settings.”

Honors the dedicated commitment to Christian beliefs exemplified in the lifetime achievements of Dr. Mary Henderson Wright, who was a devoted member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and recognizes a graduating female high school senior who plans to major in mathematics or education. Applicants must submit:

  • Ministry Verification Form
  • Copy of acceptance letter/ registration in a four-year college or university
  • Current official transcripts and ACT/SAT test scores
  • 300-word essay which addresses “What Will Be Your Legacy to Your Family and Community?”

Supports a high school junior or graduating college-bound high school senior to travel during the summer with Dr. Wright on a study tour which focuses on African History, culture, heritage and our legacy as African Americans living in the Diaspora.
