Church in Society (CIS)
Works to establish Christian principles in the economic, social, and political aspects of our church and community life.
Our Charge
To identify and to address political justice and social justice issues which have particularly adverse effect on the lives and rights of persons of African descent in the United States and throughout the Diaspora. CIS has both a political justice and a social justice committee which are committed to educating and empowering the individual and the community to improve our world by standing up to injustice.
Our Vision
Our vision is to build the lives of all people in a multitude of social, political, and educational fulfilling settings. Church In Society (CIS) has both Political and International Justice, and Social Justice committees that work on a variety of issues that affect Africans on the continent and in the Diaspora. Whether it is a march on City Hall protesting inadequate housing, conducting town hall meetings on poverty and welfare reform, hosting forums for voters from the congregation and community, so they may ask questions to potential candidates' seeking political offices, CIS is committed to educating and empowering the community.
Church In Society is one of the ministries allied with the Division of Justice of Trinity United Church of Christ, seeking out justice wherever it needs to be found. We host an array of events annually and bi-annually, for the congregation and the community. Some of these include:
Candidates' Forum
In a moderated format, voters will have candidates answer questions that are foremost on the voters' mind.
Back to School Book Bag Drive
To assist needy children, from grades Pre-K - 12th with the very basics of school supplies as the new school year commences in September.
Voter Registration Drive
To encourage and facilitate congregational and community participation in the electoral process by registering as many citizens as possible, following worship service and other church events.
Deputy Voter Registrar Training Class
Attendees are trained to register citizens to vote in the City of Chicago and Cook County.
Criminal Record Expungement
A forum, for the convenience of our community, to have access to a variety of information regarding the applicability of all resources for sealing and removing non-violent criminal records.
